How To Build Your Personal Brand

As a preview of tomorrow’s talk show, I want to share the reason why personal branding is important and how you can start building it today.

In a world where the only constant thing is change, it may seem like there is little we can do. However, all it takes is a mindset shift. If we can escape the victim mindset and focus on our basic goods, we can build a circle of competence and create our own playing field. As you develop yourself and sharpen your acumen, you can build a personal economy where your portfolio speaks for itself.

There are a few strategies to get there.

One is to invest in yourself. Another one is to build your personal brand. Personal branding takes many forms — it may be a founder story, your first Google search results, or what your friends know you for.

When/Why do you need a personal brand?

You can start to think about your personal brand when you have some experiences to back it up. If you are doing a cold outreach, this great presence can help people trust you and help you when needed.

How can you start?

If you are not ready to start building your personal brand, ask yourself:

What would you like to read about yourself in 5 years?

If you are ready to start building your personal brand, read on:

  1. Find your core values: You need to who you are and what your value; otherwise you can’t accurately represent yourself. My team has done a personal value exercise in the LivingOS retreat, and they have got a lot of the exercises. If you are interested in doing the exercise, shoot me an email and I will send you the doc.
  2. Find your style: Once you find out your core values, it is time to find the best way to communicate it. If you have a good idea of your working style, write a user manual. If you are not quite sure, experiment with a few different styles until you find the best fit.
  3. Know how you are perceived: You can ask your parents, friends, or colleague to give you some feedback. It’s also a good time to review your performance review and see what others said about you. The key is to know the baseline of their perception and start managing from there.

These are just a few questions to get you started. If you are interested in the detailed walkthrough and tactics of how to build your own personal brand, you can sign up for LivingOS University here. We are going over a detailed guide in the next group coaching session. If you are already a member, check out the email on Friday!
